Amma Short Film goes to Cannes International Film Festival
Noted art director Prabhakaran has turned director with a short-film titled ‘Amma’, which has been selected to participate in the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival to be held in France soon. The highlight of ‘Amma’ is that it has music by none other than the ‘Maestro’ Ilaiyaraaja, who rarely strays away from scoring music for feature films.
The film, based on a short story by popular author Pushpa Thangadurai, has been shot entirely in and around Kodaikkanal. Those who have seen the ‘rushes’ of the film swear that Ilaiyaraaja has done amazing work by using western musical instruments like piano and violin. Prabhakaran feels that the Maestro’s music has added unlimited value to the film’s content besides expressing the feelings of the characters in vivid detail.
Sugumar, who was the cinematographer of last year’s successful film ‘Mynaa’, has handled the camera for the short film ‘Amma’. Mark Anthropus, an English-American based in Kodaikkanal, has starred in the lead role while child artiste Archana has played the character Malli to perfection. Archana was also part of ‘Mynaa’, where she played the child-hood version of the heroine.
After Cannes, the short film is likely to travel to Moscow, Chicago, Orlando and many other Film Festivals that have been planned in advance. Prabhakaran, director of ‘Amma’, has worked in more than 60 films as art director in the past 15 years. He is also an acclaimed ad-film maker who has won many awards at quite a number of fora in the country.
